COMMON QUESTIONS
> What does Parcel 19 mean?
Naming your company is like naming a child or a pet — there are countless possibilities, meanings, and spellings. Initially, the word “package” was tossed around as we related our services to the delivery of a gift or bundle. And who doesn’t love to receive a package in the mail? We view our work as taking a client’s vision or dream and putting it into a box or built form, which is how we gravitated towards the word “parcel.” By definition, parcel means both something carried by mail and also a measurement of land — it perfectly defined what we were attempting to accomplish. We added the “19” as that was the parcel number of the first residential project which started the whole “let’s open an office together” conversation. 2019 is also the year we founded our studio. Hence, Parcel 19.
> How can you help me on my project?
Meaningful connections with our clients are the backbone of Parcel 19. We foster a close partnership with our clients and are proud to tailor our services to meet their specific needs. With extensive experience in all phases of the design and construction process, our service offerings range from early due diligence and feasibility, design development and refinement, to management and guidance throughout construction. In all aspects of the collaboration, we ensure the project progresses smoothly and the client’s vision translates to the built form.
> What does an architect do?
An architect is a licensed professional who organizes space and transforms ideas into the built form. The health and well-being of a building’s inhabitants are the legal responsibility of the architect as they consider code, science, and safety. Architects also ensure that said spaces are functional, aesthetically pleasing, and economical for the people who use them.
> Are an architect + designer the same thing?
While most architects refer to themselves as designers, a designer is not always an architect or a licensed professional. An architect is regulated and licensed by the state (or states) in which they practice architecture. As well, an architect has formal training, qualifications, and professional experience that a designer may not have. Kristen and Chris are both licensed architects in the state of California.
> I know what I want, do I need an architect?
Unless your project is purely cosmetic, you will likely need a building permit which requires plans to be signed and sealed by a licensed architect or engineer. In addition to possessing innovative design skills and the ability to prepare construction documents, an architect can recommend solutions that best suit a client’s aesthetics as well as budget. While the design and construction process can be frustrating and sometimes draining, an architect can assist with the challenges that arise with any undertaking to deliver a successful and meaningful project.
> How is an architect at a small firm different?
According to the American Institute of Architects (AIA), almost 78% of architecture firms in the United States are considered small firms with less than nine employees. A small firm setting allows its employees to develop close, personal relationships with their clients with an emphasis on value and service. Architects at a small firm may not have the opportunity to work on large skyscrapers or monumental projects, but because of their size, more opportunities are available to be nimble and to get their hands dirty in every aspect of a project.
> Do you have a signature style?
Parcel 19 looks for an original idea the moment we set foot in a building or space. We don’t just rinse and repeat the same aesthetics or trends. We reimagine the possibilities. We like to think of our work as being inspired by our client’s ideas and vision. We take cues from the built environment and surroundings and work closely with the client to define their project with a budget and purpose in mind. We salivate for simple, practical design and create the style and aesthetic of everyday enjoyment.
